Got Questions? We've got Answers!

Why the name Copps Island?

Copps Island is located at the center of our oyster farm where nature created the perfect habitat for our oysters.

What kind of oyster is Copps Island?

Crassostrea Virginica (say that ten times fast). This oyster specie is specific to the East Coast and is also known as an Eastern Oyster, American Oyster, Atlantic Oyster and Common Oyster. The exterior shell color is a dirty white to gray while the interior is a bright white with a deep purple or red-brown muscle scar.

How should I store my oysters, clams and lobsters?

The best place to store your oysters is in your refrigerator or in a cooler with ice. However, if you opt for the cooler method please make sure the oysters stay cold and dry and do not sit in fresh water.

How long will my oysters last?

Our oysters are as fresh as they get and are harvested the same day they are shipped. Oysters will typically last for as long as 2 weeks if they are properly refrigerated. As soon as you begin to notice the oyster shells “gapping” they have unfortunately gone bad. Remember to keep them cold and dry!

I found a little crab in my oyster, is it still safe to eat?

Have no fear, the Pea Crab is here! These little critters are soft-bodied crabs that live in bivalves such as oysters and mussels. They are entirely safe to eat, but we will leave that up to you! In fact, they are considered to be a delicacy in certain parts of the world. To learn more about the Pea Crab, please click here.
