THE FARM
The Kelp
Growing Process
Every aspect of our kelp farm is under our direct control and supervision.
Just as fruits and vegetables produce their own seeds, so does kelp. In early spring and fall each year, we gather a small amount of wild kelp from the sea floor under our farm. At the precise moment, we nurture these seeds along in a hatchery and in approximately a month, they are ready to be planted in the open water.
During the hatchery process, the seed is grown using only sea water collected from our farm and sunlight. That’s it. There are no chemicals or fertilizers added. The same goes once the kelp is planted on the farm. During the entire growing process, the kelp grows as nature intended, absorbing sunlight and nutrients from the cold, deep waters.
Our kelp grows best during the winter months when the water temperatures are below 45 degrees F which ensures that other marine life does not compete for those nutrients. That gives our kelp a competitive advantage which helps it thrive into beautiful, long strands of ruby-colored that we harvest in early spring.
Throughout the entire process, water quality is monitored using our own testing equipment and also by the State of Connecticut on a regular basis. Samples of kelp are also sent to various labs for examination and certification. We can issue a certificate of analysis for each harvest as well as a chain of custody certificate from seed to skin.
SEED TO SKIN
It is here – seed to skin – we grow our Sugar Kelp, Saccarina lattissima. The result is a very tender, soft & light blade where over 80% of the plant is made up of essential minerals, vitamins, and other bioactive compounds.
THE PRODUCT LINE
Sugar Kelp grown on our farm for your skin
Our farm is located above a natural reef, south of the Norwalk Islands off the Coast of Connecticut, known for its natural biodiversity both on land and under water.
From start to finish, this antioxidant-rich plant grows as nature intended – left completely undisturbed – absorbing sunlight and nutrients from the cold, deep waters. No chemicals or fertilizers are ever used as the plant flourished in its protected, free-flowing marine environment.
We hand-harvest using small boats, and within hours our Sugar Kelp is naturally air-dried and used exclusively in our products.
Throughout the entire process, water quality is regularly monitored and samples of Sugar Kelp are sent out for testing. Each harvest is issued a unique Certificate of Analysis, as well as a Chain of Custody Certificate.
This careful process ensures the highest-quality product, from our farm to your skin.
